General Meeting Minutes

7 October, 2005

There were 46 members attending this meeting.   Hopefully we will continue to a full house with new members.  Bring your friends!

While surfing the internet this writer came upon a web site ‘for seniors’:   www.seniornet.org.  This could possiblybe of help to new computer users.  There is a free on-line tutorial plus more information.

Wally Blouin Q Wally requested information on Zip Files for pictures. All
Bernie A >ZipGenius is the file compression suite you were searching for: it is free and easy to use, plus it supports more than 20 formats of compressed archives, including RAR, ARJ, ACE, CAB, SQX, OpenOffice.org documents and the excellent 7-zip. ZipGenius now can precompress executable files going to be added to a ZIP archive through the UPX compressor: www.zipgenius.it/index_eng.htm.

M.I.G.S. Q A member was not able to use printer.  Received a message that there was not a printer attached. All
Bob Young 2 & Sturg A We suggest to uninstall then reinstall.  Also to check USB cable connected to proper port and that there was not damage to either. Also a web site to ‘fix your own printer’ may help, go to www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/.

A member claimed he was not able to complete a defrag.  It was suggested to uninstall Zone Alarm, and screen savers. Defrag then reinstall Zone Alarm.

It seems that Hot Mail blocks the opening of Langa List The following site should explain why this is happening. See (http://www.langa.com/about_site.htm). It is advised not to use Hot Mail or AOL.

A member claims that with Zone Alarm his computer is getting much slower.  It was suggested that he do a complete clean up then reinstall Zone Alarm.

There apparently are a lot of free fire walls available such as Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall.

It was announced with sadness that the member Bill Hillman had passed away. There will be a celebration of his life at the Moose Hall Saturday, October 15TH.

Question: What is a Service Pack

Definations of Service Pack on the web:

  • A software patch that is applied to an installed application. It is either downloaded from the vendor’s website or distributed via Compact Disk-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM). When executed, it modifies the application in place. See
    www.labcompliance.com/glossary/r-t-glossary.htm.
  • A Service Pack (more commonly, SP) is a software program that corrects known bugs, problems, or adds new features. Companies that produce large applications such as Microsoft and their Windows NT-based operating systems typically release a service pack when the number of individual patches to the application becomes too large. Service Packs are easier to install than groups of patches, especially with multiple computers that need to be updated over a network. See
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_pack.
  • Related phrases:  windows xp service pack 2.
