Quote of the day:
I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. -
Confucius (www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Confucius/)
The meeting opened at 10:00 AM with
17 members in attendance.
John Barker explained that Bernadette
wasn't able to attend the meeting and John Sturges is filling in. John
opened the meeting with a few funny gems and then opened the floor
to Questions.

Q |
I just bought a new monitor. How do I calibrate the colour
to match my printer? |
All |
Bob
Young 2 & John Sturges |
A |
This is one
of the most difficult tasks to do in Windows, even for pros. Check
the manufacturer's website for both the monitor and printer to
see if they have driver files or colour profiles (ending in .icc
or .icf). If found, look in the website's FAQ section for
instructions for installing.
Also, many
image editing programs like Photoshop have their own colour profiles. Look
in the Help files for more info.
Or try to google for
“video test pattern” under the IMAGES tab. Go
to: www.lynxxx.nl/barco/patterns/.

Print the image,
then adjust your monitor's colours to match.
Under the WEB
tab, we found a few How-To sites:

Whenever I try to install a new program, I get a warning message
telling me to close all running programs before proceeding. Do
I need to stop Zone Alarm, etc? |
All |
| Bob 2 |
A |
It's a good idea to shut down Zone Alarm, your Anti-virus and any
other apps that show an icon next to the clock. After finishing
the installation, restart them all again. |

I have two computers connected to the internet. One of them
won't connect until I click on the Sympatico icon, then it connects. Sympatico
couldn't help me. How do I get it to connect at start up? |
All |
| John Sturges |
A |
Call Sympatico and tell them that “you connect through a
router” first, then they can walk you through the changes. XP
and 2000 should see your internet connection and connect automatically. You
shouldn't need to install the Sympatico software, it's only for use
with older Windows versions. |

Q |
How do I set up video conferencing with a Mac user in Australia? |
All |
| Bob Young 2 & John Sturges |
A |
Normally,
both parties need to be using the SAME instant messaging software. AOL
(Windows) is supposed to work with iChat (Mac). There is
also a Mac version of MSN instant messenger. At your end,
try turning Zone Alarm off while you video conference; it may
be blocking some “ports” that MSN instant messenger
needs.
Do a search
on the Microsoft Knowledge base for KB324214 for Windows Messenger
ports. MSN IM is also 100% compatible with Windows Messenger.

See Zone Alarm's
Help files to manually open ports (Pro only?). If you have
a hardware router, “Port Forwarding” may work well. Go
to www.portforward.com or www.firewalling.com for
more info.
Tip: Try to
VC with a close neighbour until you get it working properly. |

Q |
I just got a notebook and I want to set up a wireless network connection. Where
do I start? |
All |
| Bob & John |
A |
The first
step is to get a router with a “wireless access point” built-in
(it has one or more antennas) that uses 802.11B (11Mb/sec.) or
802.11G (54Mb/sec.). I use a D-Link and a U.S. Robotics
and they are both excellent.
Get it from
E-tailers like factorydirect.ca or wtigerdirect.ca. Connect
it between your cable modem and your PC. Then, get a matching
(B or G) PCMCIA wifi card for your laptop, if not built-in.
Then, ask your
favourite TechnoGeek to set it up for you. Make sure the
WiFi setup uses encryption, either WEP (802.11B & G) or WPA
(only on 802.11G devices).
Tip: Most router manufacturers
have good tutorials online if you want to try it yourself. Also, www.howstuffworks.com has
good info. |

Q |
I have the free version of Google Earth, and they also have 2 non-free
versions. I'm looking for more map detail. Are they worth
buying? |
2000, XP |
| Bob & John |
A |
One $ version
adds Global Positioning System data (longitude & latitude)
to the free version. The other $$ version is designed to
allow many “workgroup” users, like surveyors, to
view the progam at the same time. So, the free version
is as good at showing detail as the paid versions.
Note: Google
searches the web for satellite images and assembles the images
to look like a globe, like floor tiles.
So, many of
the “tiles”
may be years old and some are even black and white only. The
older the tiled image, the lower the resolution. |

11:00 AM: Virtual Coffee Break
(We are still looking for volunteers
to do the coffee thingee).
Re-convened at 11:15AM. Sorry,
I missed the name of the winner of the ELCC semi-monthly lottery.

Q |
In Internet Explorer, the Status Bar often shows “uploading” and
I'm not doing it. What is going on? |
All |
| Bob |
A |
I suspect
that you have a virus or spyware that is doing this. You have
to keep your
“definition files” up to date and run all your security
tests frequently.
Also, make sure
that you have the latest version of each program: AVG = 7.0.338,
Ad Aware = 1.06, Spybot = 1.4, Spyware Blaster = 3.4 and Zone
Alarm = 7.0, but can change at any time.
Tip: Open each
program and then click on Help for the version # and (usually)
the link to their website. |

Q |
I found an interesting device at www.devolo.co.uk that
allows you to use your existing household electrical wiring to
network PC's together. It's called “MicroLink
dLAN”. This way you don't have to run Ethernet wiring
all over the house to share an internet connection. I wonder
if there would be a lot of electrical interference? |
All |
| Bob & John |
A |
This idea
has been tried in the past and wasn't very successful, but newer
technology may make this viable. This company may have
got it right.
Tip: WiFi may
be a more reliable and less expensive solution. |

| M.I.G.S. |
Q |
We had a nasty thunder and lightning storm a while back. What is
the best way to protect our computers during storms? |
All |
| Bob & John |
A |
If you use
a surge suppressing power bar, it may help protect your PC from
some high (200 volts +/-) voltage spikes. Another common
device is an Un-interruptable Power Supply (UPS) which protects
your PC from blackouts or brownouts, which is low, not high,
voltage.
Lightning can
be as high as a million volts!!!
The only sure
way to avoid lightning damage is to unplug your PC from the electrical
outlets, disconnect your high speed modem from the PC and disconnect
the phone line from your dialup modem card. Reconnect after
the storm has passed. |

John Barker explained that Vianet was testing their
new Voice over IP service in Sudbury called vTone Broadband Phone
Service. It will likely be similar to the Vonage VoIP service. He
did caution that Elliot Lakers shouldn't be expecting it to be available
here for quite sometime, but one day...
11:59 AM: Meeting adjourned.
Starting in September, with Executive
permission, I'm hoping to do a series of mini-tutorials on “Keeping
Your PC Virus & Spyware Free”. I will cover the proper
Step by Step use of tools such as:
Microsoft updates, firewalls, anti-virus,
spyware cleaners and spyware blockers in detail. Whenever possible,
I'll include links to the Presentations in the minutes for future reference.
Final Tip:
Ever try to open a file and Windows
says something like: “There is no program associated with this
file...”?
Windows looks at the file extension,
the three letters/numbers to the right of the period, to determine
which program to use to open the data file. For example, .zip
usually opens with Winzip, .mp3 usually opens with Windows Media player,
etc.
To identify an unknown extension, go
to www.filext.com and type
the extension into the search box and it will tell you the name of
the program that created it. Install the program, open the data
file, and save it. From then on just double-click on the data
file and it will open using the new program.
