General Meeting Minutes

21 January, 2005

Quote of the day:

The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible. - George Burns

On an extremely cold and blizzardy day we had 55 attendees welcomed to the meeting by President John Barker.  Alfred and Helga Neumann joined the club as members along with Claude Ott,  and Iris Maurice.  Welcome to all.  Member Fernand Leclair was busy taking photos throughout the meeting.  Hope we get to see them.

The local Post Office has been charging us $111.00 per year  for the use of a mail box.  Upon further investigation by Bob Young 1 he found out that we could have our mail delivered directly to The Pearson Centre free of charge.

We received a letter from Darla Hennessey, the Coordinator of E.L. 50th Anniversary Celebration asking if we could participate in the festivities in some way.  One suggestion was that perhaps we could import the ‘5tyth’ anniversary logo and add it to our web page.  If anyone has a bright idea in this regard please be in touch with Katherine at katcrox@ontera.net.

The projector we are using is owned jointly by The Institute for Learning in Retirement and The Elliot Lake Astronomy Club.  We donate $75.00 yearly to each of these clubs.

M.I.G.S. Q A question from a member:  What are the advantages of ‘partitioning the hard drive ’? All
Bob A With hard drive capacities growing so large, intelligent partitioning is becoming more of an issue.  You might want to check the following web site: http://partition.radified.com. Partitioning is a personal thing.  There is much information on this web site about how and why you would want to go this route.
M.I.G.S. Q How do you display images on to DVD players? All
Bob A

There is a web site that is very knowledgeable in this regard. Go to Feature Finder at www.xequte.com.

Coffee Break

It seems that there is only 10 days from today, the 23rd  until Groundhog Day.  You should go to Wiarton Willie’s web site as follows: www.southbrucepeninsula.com/index.  Sure hope he has good news weather wise.

Here is a web site that offers cheap long distance rates to anywhere in Canada and U.S.A for 5 cents a minute, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.  No extra digits to dial as well: www.cheapphonerates.ca.

TIP OF THE DAY

Some interesting information sent to me some time ago by Helen Gordon about removing saved names and passwords.

Removing a stored user name and password is pretty simple.  Navigate to the site in question.  When it prompts you for the user name and password, click in the user name box and press the Down Arrow.  This will show all the user names stored for the particular site (usually just one).  Press the Down Arrow until the name to be removed is highlighted, and then press the DEL key.  Windows will ask whether you want to delete the user name and password.  Click on Yes and they are gone.

The following is an outline of the presentation given by new member John Sturges:

VoIP   OUTLINE

The presentation explained the benefits of using your computer to make free
long distance phone calls from PC to PC anywhere in the world to others using
Firefly software (VoIP) from www.freshtel.net (and no spyware or banner ads).
Topics included hardware needed, features and benefits, installation,
configuration, and operation.

The following web site also gives excellent information regarding this service: http://www.fcc.gov/voip.
