Al Davis Q Using Outlook Express, I'm getting so much Spam from Russia.  How do I stop it? All
Bob A Try FrontGate MX, free from www.presorium.com to block spam.  Your Internet Service Provider may not be using Spam filtering.  Web mail sites like Yahoo and Gmail use very efficient Spam filters, so give them a try.
M.I.G.S. Q My Explorer won't open full-screen sometimes. All
John S. A

By default, Windows should remember the last screen size for   Windows Explorer.

In Windows Explorer, click on the Tools Tab, Folder Options, then click on the View Tab.  You should see this:

FolderOptions

Un-check “Remember each folder's view settings” then click on the “Apply to All Folders” button.

Internet Explorer or most other web browsers like Firefox inherit their view settings from Windows Explorer unless you right-click on their Icon and change the “Run:” setting to “Maximized”.

M.I.G.S. Q I had a Pop Up appear from nowhere and I wasn't even surfing the web. Why? All
John S. A

Windows has a built-in Network Administrator process called “Messenger”.  It is used on corporate networks to notify users that “The network will be shut down for maintenance in 5 minutes.”, as an example.  This is not to be confused with Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger.  Starting with XP Service Pack 2, it was Disabled by default.

Adware companies can turn this process back on, then use it to send pop ups to your PC.

To turn off  the Messenger process, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the Windows Task Manager.  Then, click on the  Processes Tab and look for a service called Messenger.  If not disabled already, right-click on it and choose Disable.  See also:

11:00 AM: Coffee Break hosted by Marion Kennedy and Pat Scott.

Re-convened at 11:15AM.

John B. Q

I got the following error message when trying to create an AVG Rescue Disk:

AVGProb

What does this mean?

All
John S. A

Thanks for sending a photo of your error message, it's a huge help.  This message tells me that you, accidentally, tried to make a Rescue Floppy on your hard drive.

In AVG, open the Test Center and click on the Services Tab and then click on Rescue Disk Wizard.  Go through the wizard and ensure you are saving your rescue files to floppy drive A:.

Marion Q Sometimes when I plug in a USB device, Windows doesn't see it.  What's going on? All
John B. A

Windows should automatically recognize and open the Autoplay dialog box:

Dongle

If so, use the scroll bar to choose an action and click OK.

If not, open My Computer and look for your USB device.  If not on the list, click on Windows Explorer's View Tab and then click on “Refresh”.  You should now see your device.  (If not, remove and plug it in again.)

Right-click on your device and choose Properties.  Then, click on the Autoplay Tab and ensure that “Prompt me each time to chose an action” has a dot beside it.

Brian G. Q Spybot's Tea Timer seems to interfere when I try to do local searches.  Any suggestions? All
Bob A Tea Timer protects your registry from unauthorized changes and also prevents Browser Hijacking.  Try changing Tea Timer's priority to a progressively lower setting until it behaves.
John S. Q

On our website, the “Front Page Extensions” got messed up.    “FPE” affects the way the site behaves. According to Microsoft, you have to use the Files > Publish command in Front Page 2003 to update the FPE files on our web host.   I haven't been able to get this to work.

So far, I can't find any good tutorials on Publishing with FP.  Any suggestions or advice?

All
Bob A

If you haven't already done so, do a Google search for Front Page 2003 tutorials or Email Microsoft for support.

If anyone has any experience with Front Page and would like to help, please get in touch with john.

Stan Q In most programs, under the Files Tab, you have Save and Save As...  What's the difference between them? All
John B. A

The Save As... command pops up the familiar Windows Save As dialog box, in which you enter the name, file type and location of the file you wish to save the active file as.  The same checks and validations occur as for the Save command.

Once done, you can use Save any time you update the file.
