My screensaver freezes occasionally. Why? |
All |
Bob (2) |
A |
A Windows process may be hogging memory. Open the task
manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) and click on the Processes tab to see
what is actually running. Look for the highest CPU usage
(ignore the System Idle process). Google for the process
name to see if it is a legitimate process. If not legitimate,
you may have malware. Run your spyware tests.
Modern CRT and LCD monitors don't suffer from “phosphor
burn” like they did years ago, so a screensaver isn't necessary. To
turn it off, Right-Click on the desktop > Properties, open the
Screensaver Tab and choose None from the drop-down list, and click
OK. |

Q |
What about this CME-24 virus, and how do we protect ourselves? |
All |
Bob (2) |
A |
Update and Run your Anti-virus tests. Don't open suspicious
Email, that's how it gets on your PC. IF AVG finds any of
these, you got rid of it:

Larry also suggested using Mail Washer to filter
junk mail. |

11:00 AM: Coffee Break:
Bernie and Lloyd McCabe brought in Tim's coffee and donuts. We all thank
you both!!!
Re-convened at 11:15AM
John Barker explained how to create folders in Outlook Express and IE6
favourites. Also, you can click on Start > Programs and right
click on any column and choose “sort by name” to put all
your programs in alphabetical order by folders then files.
A motion was passed to continue the Tim's coffee on a regular basis.

Q |
I received an attachment that has embedded audio. How
do I save just the audio to CD? |
All |
Bob & John |
A |
It is very difficult to extract embedded streaming audio. Try
Audacity (google for it), an audio file editor, to see if it can
record the music as you play it.
Once captured, save as a standard Windows audio file. Then,
go to Start > Help and Support and type “Burn Audio” into
the search box to learn more about creating audio CDs.
Use Windows Media Player or your favourite CD Burning software
to burn to CD. |

Q |
How do I use WinZip and what does it do? |
All |
Bob & John |
A |
Windows XP includes a basic version of WinZip that compresses
or un-compresses files and folders. For other versions of
Windows, I recommend IZArc (free). A typical “zipped” file
has a “.zip” extension.
Go to Start > Help and Support and type “Compress files” into
the search box to learn more about compressing files.
When I right-click on a folder, I click as shown to compress the
folder using IZArc.

Example: Word file size 24KB, when zipped file size is 6KB.
When I right-click on a Zipped file, I click as shown to uncompress
the file using IZArc.
Tip: Jpeg files are already compressed, so zipping doesn't make
them much smaller. |

Q |
How do I make my desktop Icons larger? |
All |
Bob &
John S. |
A |
LCD monitors have a default screen resolution that shouldn't
be changed. If the native resolution is 1600 X 1200 for example,
your desktop Icons will be very small.
Leave the resolution at the manufacturer's recommended setting.
To make the Icons larger, right-click on the desktop and choose
Properties. Click on the Appearance tab then click the Effects
button.
Set as shown:

Still not large enough? Use a custom size as shown:TIP: Try
64, 72, 80, 88, 96 pixels, etc. (< divisible by 8)
