Quote of the day:
The surprising thing about young fools is how many survive to
become old fools. - Doug Larson (www.brainyquote.com)
The meeting opened at 10:00 AM with about 35 members in attendance.
John told another of his cute jokes and announced that the new
Institute for Learning in Retirement brochures were now available. Sturg
advised that all members should get the latest Windows and Office updates
due to a major security flaw in all Windows versions.
John then opened the floor to questions:

Q |
I use a photo editing program that came with
my HP camera. How do I convert a bitmap (.bmp) image to a
JPG format? |
ME/XP |
Bob II |
A |
In your HP software, click on the File tab, then
Save As and open the “Save as type:” drop down menu
as shown:

Choose Save As JPEG, if available.
If not, IrfanView, Picasa and PhotoFiltre (google
for them) are only a few of many free programs that can also do
this.
Or, go to the ELCC website > We Recommend and
click on the last entry for a list of many of the programs we discuss,
with download links. |

Q |
My MS-AntiSpyware program has expired. How
do I update MS-AS? |
2000/XP |
Bob II & Sturg |
A |
Follow this link to get the latest version:
www.microsoft.com/downloads/
Note: Microsoft will force you to authenticate
your legal copy of Windows first. Users of “acquired” versions
will have to find another way. Bill is on the warpath!!! |

Q |
After re-installing XP, I lost my Lotus program
and don't have the CD. How do I open *.wk1 files created
by Lotus 1-2-3? |
All |
Sturg |
A |
Lotus went bust in 1997. Fortunately, all
modern spreadsheets can open uncompressed Lotus files, then they
must be saved in the newer program's default or other supported
format. Very few, if any, save back to Lotus.
You may also have to modify some formulas and learn
a new spreadsheet program.
If you have the latest MS-Excel, Corel Suite or
Open Office (free) you should be able to open your old files, provided
they weren't backed up by Lotus. |

Q |
I tried to send 6 large images as attachments
to a number of family members and my Emails bounced. When
I reduced the attachments to 3 they went through. Why? |
All |
Bob II & Sturg |
A |
All mail servers have a maximum “attachment file size” limit. Hotmail
= 2 MB, Gmail = 10 MB, etc. Just guessing, that 6 images
was too big, but 3 was OK because it was under the maximum size
limit. The problem may be with the Internet Service Provider
(ISP) at your end or their end or both ends. Call to check.
Sturg uses Easy Thumbnails from www.fookes.com/ to
create smaller size images. Catherine uses Picasa. Bob
and John B. use Irfanview to create thumbnails and then Email.
Tip: Go to www.yousendit.com and
check out their service. THEY let you upload all of your large
images and then THEY send the link to all your gang so they can
get all your pictures full size from THEM. Upload Limit =
1000 MB. |

John Jack |
Q |
My Spybot S&D says that MS-AntiSpyware is
a threat. What is going on? |
All |
Bob II & Sturg |
A |
We have never seen this on our computers, so
it's likely Malware on your machine. Some viruses and other
malware try to disable or trick popular security software.
Do Windows Updates first, then make sure you have
the latest versions of all Security programs AND the latest definitions,
then run all tests. |
|
M.I.G.S. |
Q |
Recently I've noticed that my Win 98 no longer
has pop-ups. Why? |
98/ME |
|
A |
The latest version of IE6 has a built-in pop
up stopper and Windows Updates still provides Security updates
for 98. You likely did an automatic update and now have the
latest IE (or you are very lucky!). |

11:00 AM: Virtual Coffee Break
Re-convened at 11:15AM.
John Sturges showed an example of an Email Phishing Scam and explained
what to look for and what NOT to do. Do not send any private info
via Email - ever.
Instead, call the requesting company to verify they sent the Email first. You
can report suspicious Emails to www.phonebusters.com run
by the OPP or RCMP.
Sturg also gave a short demonstration of Microsoft's free Baseline Security
Analyzer (google for MBSA) used to test Windows for Security problems.
Next Meeting,Sturg will show a slick tool for doing remote troubleshooting
called LogMeIN.
11:58 AM: Meeting adjourned.
