- Dale Carnegie. Source: www.xpnews.com
The meeting opened at 10:00 AM with 28 members in attendance.
Announcements:
Brian Greenway brought in some ink cartridge brochures from Island Printing
in Sudbury.
Peter Kennedy donated some good Computer reference books for our library.
John Barker has set up his own web log (blog). See it at www.elliot-lake.blogspot.com
John Sturges put a motion on the floor to purchase FrontPage 2003 needed
to maintain the website as the club's trial version has expired. It's
available from Staples (estimated cost $159). Seconded and passed
unanimously.
Sturg also showed some “free on-line Windows training courses” with
a variety of useful topics at www.cnet.com/howto Some
of the best on the Web!!!

Windows Media player suddenly appeared on my screen. I've
never used it. What is it and why is it on my PC? |

Windows Media Player is built into all modern versions of Windows. Were
you doing a Windows update? If so, WMP was probably patched. This
is normal. |

How do my German relatives view our club website in their native
language? |
All |
| John S. |
A |
Go to google and look beside the Search Bar for “Language
Tools”. Click on it and Scroll down to see this

Then, type: www.elliotlakecomputerclub.com in the “Translate
a web page:” box as shown above, choose ANY language and
click on the “Translate” button. They should
see this:

Note: The text on the buttons doesn't change because the
buttons are actually pictures.
They can also try Google Tool Bar's WordTranslator, as shown above
right. This is what their ad says:
“Ever need to translate words on English web pages into
another language? Don't bother looking up words one by one - just
hover your mouse cursor over an English word and Toolbar's WordTranslator
will tell you what it means in your own language. WordTranslator
currently supports translation from English into Chinese (Traditional
and Simplified), Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, German and
Spanish.” |

How do we start doing an ancestry search? |
All |
| Bob |
A |
Go to www.rootsweb.com or www.somersethouse.com (UK)
or www.latterdaysaints.com (USA)
or www.cindislist.com which
is a portal to other great links, and start your search there. Don't
expect instant or even accurate results, this involves lots of
hours of detective work.
Free Geneology software is available from: www.legacyfamilytree.com and www.sourceforge.net,
among others. |

11:00 AM: Coffee Break (included Tim's coffee and donuts!!!)
Re-convened at 11:15AM
Presentation:
We tried to view a Bald Eagle's nest with eggs in B.C. using an on-line
streaming web cam at http://www.infotecbusinesssystems.com/wildlife/default.asp. Unfortunately,
we had difficulty connecting. So, we did a Google search and found
Peregrine Falcons in Hamilton at this portal: http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/webcams.html.

I have a number of people who want to use the audio chat feature
in: AOL, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo Instant Messengers to make free PC
to PC phone calls to me.
Do I need separate software for each or is there a Universal Instant
Messenger that can see others from one program? |

Trillian from www.ceruleanstudios.com is
a (free) classic that allows you to IM with many different services.
If free phone calls are your primary reason for using IM, you
may also want to try Google Talk from www.google.com/talk/ .
It's also free and very easy to use.
I've been using it for about six months and it sounds better than
my phone. You will ALL need a Gmail web mail account, but
it's well worth it. Call me for a free invitation, I have
about 100 of them. |
