Email 1:  My computer is slow.  Is this from too many temporary files?

ME,XP
Bob Young 2 A

Explained temporary files.  In IE, Tools > Internet Options and in the General Tab, Click the Delete Files Button under Temporary Internet files.

EMail

Click the Delete Offline Files on the next screen, then OK.

cCleaner and Easy Cleaner are third party programs that do a better job because they clean up system temp files as well as IE temp files.  In cCleaner:  Click Analyze, then Click Run.  In Easy Cleaner:  Remove temporary files first, then, clean the registry.  Don't use the Remove Duplicate File Feature!

Goto www.elliotlakecomputerclub.com and click on the We Recommend Button for links to web sites.

Also, any time your computer slows down, you likely have spyware and or virus infections.  Do a full system scan.

M.I.G.S. Q

Every time I open Outlook, it shows a little pop-up box for a second and then it disappears.  What could it be?

Finding programs that run in the background can be a challenge.  With XP's SP2, it may be new security features such as a pop-up blocker; you may have to lower some settings.

Also, HP printers have a utility that accesses the web.

Backweb is another program that may be running in the background.  Use google to see if you need this program.

Look in Start > Run and type: msconfig, then click on the Startup tab to see a list of all programs that start automatically.

Un-check to disable any application (use with caution).

A final thought:  remove any programs you no longer use, the problem may go away.

11:00 AM: Coffee Break (due to bad weather, no Tim's coffee and donuts!!!)

Re-convened at 11:15AM

Ilona asked about Windows Media Player in Windows 98 and how to Rip And Burn audio CD's.

98
Bob Young 2 A

Your CD-RW drive should have come with CD burning software, usually Easy CD Creator or Nero Burning ROM.

Windows Media Player can be also be used instead of the above programs to Rip (copy from audio CD to PC) and Burn (convert and write audio to CD) in Windows XP.

To learn more about Ripping and Burning ask your grandkids, they are the experts.

M.I.G.S. Q How long does a CD last? All
Sturg A

100 years down to 2 years, depending on whom you believe, the manufacturers or the tech testers.  The real question is how long will CD drives be around?  Remember 8 track players?  Bad example!

M.I.G.S. Q

When I send nice pictures to my friend, he says they are all very dark.  I think his monitor is out of adjustment.  How do you check monitor settings?

All
Bob Young 2 and Sturg A

Go to: Google > Images Tab and search for test pattern.  Download the image (like a TV test pattern) and refer to the monitor's manual to adjust.
