Q

A friend sent me a CD full of photos and when I open the CD on my desktop PC, I don't see all the thumbnails, but I can when I open them on my laptop.  Both use XP and have 512MB RAM.  Any suggestions?

All
John S. A

Try copying them to your hard drive first, then open them in “View Tab > Thumbnail view” there.  Sometimes, Windows doesn't like to open lots of thumbnails while on removable media.

Q

How do I make my own Music CDs?

All

John S.

A

You can use: Windows Media Player, or Easy CD Creator or Nero Burning Rom that came with your CD-RW drive.  Each program has it's own procedures, so click on the Help Tab in your burning program for more information.

Tip:  Ask your grandkids to show you how, they are the experts!!!

Add Remove Programs sometimes shows a “Remove Only” button.  Why?

All
John S. A

It depends on how the un-install program was written by the program's author.  You will also sometimes see a “Change/Remove” button, but rarely is “Change” an option, you can only remove the application.

M.I.G.S. Q

I see many versions of Java Runtime in Add / Remove Programs.  What's happening?

All
John S. A

Each time Java finds updates, it downloads and installs a full new version.  Only the latest version is needed, so you can safely remove the older versions.

Peter Q

My DVD player has a CF reader built in.  On a recent trip, I had to empty my CF card to a CD to reuse it.  The CD won't play on my DVD, how can I see my pictures?

All
John S. A

Some DVD players have problems with CDs, they can play a CD-R but not a CD-RW for example.  To verify media compatibility, check the owner's manual.

Tip:  Copy the new images from your CF card to another CD, then copy the old images from the first CD to the now empty CF card and play the flash card on your DVD player.

Peter showed a LCD Screen Protector accessory for Digital cameras.

11:00 AM: Coffee Break (No Tim's coffee and donuts, Bernie as away.)

Re-convened at 11:15AM.

John Barker showed a hilarious movie called Flight405 from www.405themovie.com

On my desktop, my tiled wallpaper appears very slowly.  Any suggestions?

John S. A

Check the resolution settings for your graphics card.  Right-click on your desktop and choose Properties.  On older PC's you may need to use 800 X 600 and 16 colours due to limited Video Card Memory.

Q Free Cell looks tiny on XP.  How do I make it bigger? XP
John S. A

Free Cell has been around for years and was originally written to run on older computers at 640 X 480 or 800 X 600 screen resolution.  It can't be changed to today's screen resolutions of 1024 X 768 and up.

Using google, see if you can find a stand alone version of Free Cell (look for Plus, Pro, Premium, etc. in name) that runs at higher resolution.

Peter Q

This is a follow up to my previous question.  Is there an easy way to create photo CDs?

XP, MCE
John S. A

I believe that Windows XP and your Media Center Edition have tools built in to create photo CDs, check on Start > Help & Support for more info.  Just type “Photo CD” into the search box there.  Also, I think Picasa, free from Google, can burn photo CDs.
