Quote of the day
Harvard's Law as Applied to Computers:
Under the most rigorously controlled conditions of pressure, temperature,
volume, humidity and other variables, the computer will do as it
damn well pleases - Author unknown. Source: julita.usask.ca/homepage/Murphy.htm
The meeting opened at 10:00 AM with 27 members in attendance.
John Barker opened the Nominations for the 2006 Executive. Bob
Young (1) advised that he would not be running for Treasurer and Katherine

no nominations were forthcoming.

you history buffs.
John offered a few good jokes and then opened the floor to Questions:

I've been using Firefox for a few months and been
very pleased with it. But I am having trouble using it to
do my banking at Scotia. When I call them for help, they
only support Internet Explorer. What Firefox settings are
preventing access? |
All |
John S. |
A |
I use Firefox V1.5 on Scotia with no problems. For
Firefox to work properly you must have “Java Runtime” installed
first (free from www.sun.com).
Then, in Firefox V1.5, go to Tools > Options and
click on the Content Icon and check both the Enable Java and Enable
JavaScript Boxes.
Lastly, click on the Advanced Icon > Security
Tab.

Click OK. Re-start Firefox and test on the
Scotia site. |

I recently updated my ATI graphics drivers and
now when Windows boots I get an error message saying something
about Cli.exe not loading, 3 times. Then windows loads normally. What
is Cli.exe? |
All |
Bob (2) |
A |
Search google for “Cli.exe”. Google
identifies it as ATI's Updater program. My guess is that
your previous download was corrupted. Delete the previously
downloaded file, and in Add/Remove Programs un-install all ATI
files listed.
Download the driver again, then go to Control Panel > System > Hardware
Tab > Device Manager Button and click the [+] to show your graphics
Adapter. Right-click and choose Properties, click on the
Drivers Tab and un-install the driver.
Reboot Windows and install the driver file you just
downloaded. It should fix it. |

Q |
I used Firefox to go to www.elliotlakecomputerclub.com to
download the Minutes and when they opened, the graphics were all
screwy. What's up with that? |
All |
John S. |
A |
Firefox adheres to web standards, but Internet
Explorer doesn't. Our website is designed using Microsoft
FrontPage.
FrontPage and Internet Explorer work well together
because they are both written by Microsoft. To see the Minutes
as a a pretty web page, use IE. If you want security, use
Firefox.
This is a very common problem with Microsoft web
tools. |

Q |
Last meeting, someone asked why they only see a
Red [X] instead of pictures on some websites. I found a document
that explains possible causes. Can we include it in
the Minutes? |

Q |
I recently downloaded and installed the latest
version of Zone Alarm. It just started asking me to upgrade
to Pro every time I boot. What's up? |
All |
Bob (2) &John S. |
A |
The free version AND the Pro trial version download
as one program. When you install ZA, one of the screens
asks you to choose the Trial version or the Free version, and defaults
to the trial version.
Un-install and Re-install and watch for the “Version” screen
and click on the free version, and continue. That should fix it. |
|
M.I.G.S. |
Q |
I just finished a Windows update for Internet Explorer
and now I can't connect to the web. How do I fix this? |
All |
Bob (2) |
A |
Open IE and click on the Tools Tab, then choose
Internet Options... Then click on the Connections Tab and
click on the LAN Setting Button. You should see this screen:

Check the Automatically detect settings Checkbox
and Click OK several times to return to IE. Then, close
IE and Restart IE to use the new settings. |
