John then opened the floor to questions:

Name
Q&A
Details
OS
M.I.G.S. Q What keyboard shortcut closes a message window? All
Bob A

The short answer may be : ALT+F4, but try it and if it doesn't work as expected, try :

To search Google for “Windows keyboard shortcuts”.

In Start > Help and Support, type “keyboard shortcuts” into the search box.

Al Davis Q When I try to scan a document with my HP scanner, and open in Word Perfect to edit, I get garble.  Why? All
Bob A

It sounds like you are saving the document as a photo or other file format that Word Perfect doesn't recognize.  You should check and see if your scanning software supports OCR, (Optical Character Recognition) which converts a scanned document into editable text.

Open your scanning program and click on the Help tab to learn more about its features and available file types.

M.I.G.S. Q Why doesn't Google Earth show as much detail in North America as in Europe? 2000>
Bob & Sturg A

Google Earth assembles it's images from the latest images it finds on the web.  It then creates a map of the world using the images as tiles, so it  is actually a mosaic.

Many of the “tiles” are older satellite images of Canada and the USA that didn't have the camera resolution that the newer European satellites use.

Over time, the old images will be replaced with the latest images.

You probably noticed some tiles are grayed out, that's because they were taken so long ago they weren't even colour, they were black and white images.

M.I.G.S. A I want to start using the free Open Office (www.openoffice.org) instead of an old version of Microsoft Office.  How do I set OO up to read and write files in MS-Office format? All
Sturg Q

Step 1:

In Open Office, click on the Tools tab > Load/Save > Microsoft Office and you should see this:

OOTools

Check all the boxes as shown above to enable MS-Office compatibility and click OK.

Step 2:

When you use OO to create a file, make sure that you set the “Save as type:” as shown:

OOTools2

Tip:  Always check this setting if your saved files end in ”.odt” instead of “.doc”.  ”.odt” is OO's native filetype

11:00 AM: Coffee Break

Re-convened at 11:15AM.

John Barker demonstrated Gmap Pedometer at: www.gmap-petometer.com which is part of Google Maps and Google Earth.  It allows joggers, ATV riders and snowmobile users to map their routes and calculate distances, etc.

A lengthly discussion followed on using Google Earth.  John Barker also mentioned that will be away for the next meeting.
